What Brazilians think about the necessities of life and acceptable living standards?
A pilot study in São Paulo city
Abstract
This paper presents the results of a pilot study, carried out in the city of São Paulo, aiming at understanding the nature and extent of multidimensional poverty in Brazil, using the Consensual Approach. A survey was developed from previous fieldwork with focus groups that discussed the perceptions of Brazilians regarding the basic needs for a decent standard of living. An online tool made possible to run the survey while maintaining the social distancing rules during the pandemic. The final sample includes 155 respondents from three favelas in the city of São Paulo. The results present what is socially perceived as needs for a decent standard of living in Brazil. Also, they indicate the level of deprivation found in the three favelas, with emphasis on food insecurity. This pilot study and its results demonstrate alternative ways to democratically measure poverty in Brazil.
